Dr Ajinkya Pawar is a Consultant Surgical Oncologist with focused expertise in gastrointestinal and HPB cancers, peritoneal surface malignancies, cytoreductive surgery (CRS), HIPEC, PIPAC, and minimally invasive and robotic cancer surgery.
His journey in medicine began at the prestigious Seth G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai, one of India’s most respected academic teaching institutions, where he completed his MBBS. Drawn to surgery, he went on to complete his M.S. in General Surgery at ESI-PGIMSR, Mumbai, followed by DNB General Surgery, establishing a strong foundation in surgical care.
His growing interest in cancer surgery took him to the Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI), Ahmedabad, a major tertiary cancer centre and academic institution, where he completed his M.Ch. in Surgical Oncology, followed by DrNB Surgical Oncology. Here, he was trained extensively in head neck cancers, breast & thoracic cancers and gynaecological cancers along with gastrointestinal & HPB cancers. He further strengthened his minimally invasive surgical skills through FIAGES, MMAS training in oesophageal surgery, and FALS in Robotic Surgery.
A defining part of his training has been his pursuit of expertise in peritoneal surface malignancies. He received dedicated PIPAC certification at the National Cancer Centre Singapore, followed by the European Certification in Peritoneal Surface Oncology (ECPSO), with specialized clinical exposure in Italy and France, including training at Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan, and Lyon Sud Hospital, France. He subsequently completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Peritoneal Surface Malignancies, CRS, HIPEC and PIPAC at the Aster International Institute of Oncology, Bangalore.
Seeking further depth in complex peritoneal cancer surgery, he trained in the United Kingdom as an NHS Clinical Fellow at the Peritoneal Malignancy Institute, Basingstoke, internationally recognized as one of the world’s most experienced and highest-volume centres for cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC. His UK training was complemented by MIPDEd membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
His pursuit of advanced minimally invasive surgery subsequently led him to South Korea, a global leader in laparoscopic and robotic gastrointestinal surgery. At Yeungnam University Hospital, he completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Complex HPB Surgery, refining advanced approaches to liver, pancreatic and biliary surgery.
He then trained in Robotic and Laparoscopic Gastric Cancer Surgery at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH), a pioneering institution in the evolution of minimally invasive gastrectomy and advanced gastric cancer surgery. His training there provided focused exposure to contemporary laparoscopic and robotic techniques for gastric cancer. He also holds Da Vinci Robotic Surgery Certification, further complementing his experience in advanced robotic oncologic surgery.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Pawar has maintained a strong commitment to research, academic surgery and innovation. He has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed national and international publications across surgical oncology, peritoneal surface malignancies, minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery, contributed to international and national surgical oncology book chapters, and serves as a reviewer for surgical journals.
His interest in improving surgical techniques has also led to the development of “AJ’s Orbicularis Oris Stitch,” an innovative reconstructive technique for central-arch oral cavity cancers, reflecting his emphasis on thoughtful surgical innovation aimed at balancing oncological clearance, reconstruction and functional outcomes.
With training across India, Singapore, Italy, France, the United Kingdom and South Korea, Dr Pawar brings together diverse international experience, evidence-based oncology and modern surgical technology. His philosophy is centred on selecting the right treatment for the right patient—whether through conventional surgery, laparoscopy, robotic surgery, CRS-HIPEC or PIPAC—while keeping oncological safety, function, quality of life and individual patient needs at the heart of every decision.
